Hawkins Preserve is located within the southern city limits of Cortez, Colorado. Within its boundaries residents and visitors to our area alike are able to view and enjoy cultural resources, sweeping vistas, and opportunities to hike, jog, or bike in a scenic and serene environment without having to leave the city. The Preserve also supports a plethora of native plant and animal communities.

The land was donated to the Cortez Cultural Center by Mr. Jack Hawkins in the 1990s. In 2004 the Cortez Cultural Center placed the entire 122 acres into a conservation easement held by MLC in order to protect public access and the natural and archaeological resources at Hawkins Preserve from development for generations to come.
